The crew of Fleet #10's PLUM CRAZY accept their awards on Friday night for a daily first, a regatta first, and the Boat of the Day. From left to right: Andy D. Skibo (driver/rig trim/bill payer), Steve Gale (Foredeck/Mast), Bill Howard (TAC/Sail and Rig Trim), Nick Skibo (formerly Bow, now Trimmer/Pit). Missing is Doug Clark, who was primary TAC for this race. The start of Race #1 on Monday got off in about 15 knots of wind. Is it just me, or do these boats seem a little disorganized on their first start?
Jim Doane powers FLAME upwind in Race #1. She eventually placed third in this race, but her 3-1 for the day was good enough for second to PLUM CRAZY after the first day. Alex Baluta chartered the shoal draft HAZE II from Florida owner Dick Starita.
On the first downwind leg we see PHENIX, JUXTAPOSE (background) and WINGED VICTORY. The three boats rounding in close succession at the first leeward mark are PLUM CRAZY, WONDER WAGON, and WET LEOPARD. The boat already heading upwind is PHANTOM.
Slightly later, we see the two shoal drafts, ANDIAMO and the brand new SUNQUEST #303, chartered by Fleet #6 owner Marv Pozefski rounding, with PHENIX in the background still heading for the mark. Billy Baldwin from Fleet #6 takes CYAN up the second weather leg on Monday.
Brian Tedeschi from Fleet #2 has IMPOSTER moving upwind in the first race. That's Jude Fogarty and Pat Clark from Fleet #5 in Chicago in ANDIAMO dousing their chute on an outside rounding at the second leeward mark in Race #1. Looks like Marv Pozefski taking the inside on SUNQUEST in the background.
At the finish of Race #1 it was Skibo's PLUM CRAZY beating out Geoffrey Pierini PHANTOM by one second in the closest finish of the regatta. Here's the start of Race #2. With such a long line, wouldn't you think there'd be a better lineup?
Here's PHANTOM going downwind in Race #2. And yes, Virginia, the water is that green. That's Fleet #14's Tom Coates' MASQUERADE getting ready for a douse at the first leeward mark in Race #3, close on the tail of PHANTOM.
This looks like a few seconds later with both the spinnakers coming down. PHANTOM seems to have the inside position at the mark. This is the start of Race #4 on Wednesday. Notice the lack of wind. On the left that's CYAN seeming to having its nose out on Dick Watts' and JUXTAPOSE. This boat had an exciting trip from Fleet #1's home grounds in San Francisco.
