2010 Scoring Rules and Guidelines

  • Boats are eligible for scoring if the owner is an Active Member of Fleet 6 and the J/105 National Class Association.
  • All boats participating in Fleet 6 Races must comply in all respects with the Fleet 6 rules (which are identical to the National Class Rules except for the next bullet), including rules regarding helmsmen (or driver) and crew qualification, weight equalization, equipment, and sails. See http://www.j105.org/racing/key_rules.php for a one page summary of the class rules.
  • Until Larchmont Race Week in 2008, all boats that have a valid float line certificate do not need a valid weight certificate to be scored for the Fleet 6 trophies.    Beginning with LRW 2008, a valid weight certificate is required as per the National Rules.
  • A boat must participate in 65% or more of races on the Fleet 6 High Point Schedule or Pro Series Schedule for her score to be considered for the relevant series. The High Point Series is the Fleet 6 Championship.
  • For the High Point Series, Level A applies all crew must be ISAF group 1 except for one group 2 who cannot drive or one group 3 who must be the 100% owner of the boat).  For the Pro Series,  National Rules Level A applies as well, except that each boat may have one coach on the boat who may be a group 3. The coach will not count for weight limit but cannot hike out, trim, steer or otherwise sail the boat.
  • A boat will be allowed to discard every seventh race for the High Point Series. There are no throwouts for the Pro Series.
  • For both series, the Cox-Sprague Scoring System will be used with only eligible member yachts being scored. In this system, higher points are awarded for better finishers. The boat with the highest "Percentage of Perfection" wins. Discards are based on lowest individual race "Percentage-of-Perfection" scores.
  • Separate trophies will be awarded for the Season Championship and the Pro Series. Additional trophies may also be given in the discretion of the fleet 6 officers.
  • Any issue not covered by rules above will be settled by the RRS, as modified by the prescriptions of US Sailing. If there is no relevant prescription, the Fleet 6 officers will be the sole arbiter.

Cox-Sprague Scoring System

Cox-Sprague scoring system recommended by Y.R.A. of L.I.S, modified as described below

In each race the number of starters will determine the column to be used in the table below, and each boat will be credited with the number of points indicated for her finishing place. A boat's series score shall be her "Percentage of Perfection" calculated by dividing her total points scored by the total points she would have had, had she won every race in which she started. A boat which does not finish or is disqualified in a race shall receive a score for the place one greater than the number of starters in that race.

Note: Points in ( ) are for DNF & DSQ

For those who enjoy it, the fine print...

For finishing place n > 20 a boat will be awarded the integer value of 59 - 2*log( n-19 ) points. Fractional finishing positions awarded to a boat by the race committee or by a decision of the protest or appeals committee will be credited with points interpolated linearly from the table.

Modifications made to the original Cox-Sprague Scoring Table:

  1. For races with 2 boats the original table appears to have an error. To be consistent with 68% Percentage of Perfection for dead last in a 3 boat race the "4" in the column of the original table corresponding to 2 boats should be a "7" giving a 70% score rather than a 40% score.
  2. In races with a high number of starters, the extension to the table for finish positions beyond 20th place is to award points equal to INT(59 - 2*log( n-19 )).
