Great Lakes ChampionshipTylishan and the Chicago contigent win fourth overall in first Great Lakes Championship Championship. Skipper Rich Stearns and crew Blane Shea , Dorin Cadrea, Jon Weglarz, Dan Pesce, and Loucius Arvitas raced hard in all 10 races. The first race was a learning experience due to the current and onshore header. However, once the crew understood the local secrets the boat was extemely fast. Late Friday we nailed a second just behind the leader, Saturday with a bullet and we started Sunday with another bullet! Next year the Championship will be held outside of Cleveland and is a must for any boats that are starting their travelling campaigns.

Local crews are encouraged to weigh-in at their harbors this Saturday. Contact information is below. Boats need to comply with the crew weight limitations or you will be protested. Boats MUST have either a Float Certificate or Weight Certificate on file with Blane to avoid inspection/compliance issues. Blane's fax number is 312-422-9193. Peter Fray New Fleet 5 J105!Check out the latest addition to Fleet 5 and welcome Rich Stearns as the owner of Hull # 673. Peter Fray Convexity takes the Fourth Annual J/105 Match Racing InvitationalThis last weekend eight J/105s met just south of Chicago at the Jackson Park Yacht Club for the fourth annual J/105 Match Racing Invitational. The event began from an idea to find the best way to tune up for the year and has grown into a premier event for the J/105 fleet on Lake Michigan. This year we expanded the event to a full two days and raised the certification level to an ISAF level 4 grade event which brought some of the best sailors from around the country to a wonderful venue at JPYC. The first day the race committee ran a full round robin consisting of seven flights with four matches each. The weather was spectacular for this sailing arena just off the shore near Jackson Park. Early in the day we started with 18 knots of breeze off the land and the breeze built throughout the day settling in at 25 knots steady with puffs eclipsing 30 by the end of the day. This put a premium on boat handling for the shorter courses used for match racing. Under these conditions, David Wagner's Gigi emerged unbeaten and claimed the top seed for Sunday. Sunday brought more civilized weather to let the top teams show their tactical abilities. The wind started from the north-east at around five knots and gradually built to around eight knots as the sea breeze filled in. In the first to two points semifinals, Gigi eliminated RedPortLeft and Don Wilson's Convexity eliminated Blane Shea's Striking in three races. The first to three point finals began with Gigi winning the first race, but Convexity rebounded to win the next three to take the event. I'd like to extend my personal thanks to the cast that helped pull this event together. It was truly a unique mid-western event with umpire boats coming from three clubs and several umpires coming from as far away as Sheboygan. An all-star Chicago team led by Dick Schweers as PRO, Gary Hendrickson as Chief Umpire and Cliff Black as Certified Umpire pulled the sailing on the water together into a spectacular event. Janet Hansen's efforts along with the broad membership of JPYC showcased the hospitality of JPYC that those of us that have come back multiple times have become accustomed to expect. More pictures of the event can be found at http://www.j105matchrace.com. Marty McKenna First BOY Race on 5/25!Congratulations to Vytis, Dos Aguilas, and Striking!
