You are on this list because you sailed in KWRW recently or asked previously to be put on the list.
Please reply if either:

1. You want to be removed from the list, or
2. You are planning to sail in 2008, or
3. You sailed in 2007, but do not plan to sail in 2008, or
4. You are aware of newbies who might want to attend in 2008, but who may not yet be on this list.

I'm starting the 2008 potential entry list with the 33 entries from 2007 (less PUFFIN, which was sold).
See the list here:
http://www.j105.org/KWRW2008/entries.php

If you plan to attend in 2008, you should be planning already. You should have received your NOR from Premiere-Racing. If you haven't, go to their web site here:
http://premiere-racing.com/

Contrary to what I posted on the National site, there is no Road Advisory yet for 2008. But Carl Gitchell has done some research and this is what he found out:

I just talked to the Florida DOT Permits section and it looks like we’ll have similar restrictions this year. Wide load travel will be restricted to 9 PM – 5 AM and we’ll need an approved escort. When you get your FL Wide Load Permit it will stipulate all the restrictions (same as last year).
I highly encourage folks to get the wide load permits even if they don’t plan to follow the added restrictions. Trip permits only cost $5 for a 5-day travel window and it can be done on-line (http://www.fdotmaint.com/permit/).

As per usual there is a KWRW page accessible from the national j105.org site that you may wish to bookmark. It is:
http://www.j105.org/racing/kwrw.php

I'll be updating every month or so for the first few months. Let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers,
Nelson

Key Westers,

Now that the 69 boat NAC in Annapolis is over, we can look forward to Key West. We currently have 35 confirmed with more waiting in the wings.

Here the boats that are currently committed (ones with asterisks already registered):
*ACHIEVER V, ANOTHER HAZARD, BABE, *BAT IV, *BLINK, *CONVEXITY, EAGLES WINGS, ECLIPSE, *FLAME, FORERUNNER, *GRACE O'MALLEY, *GUMPTION, *JA2, *J'MAKIN'WAVES, *KINCSEM, *LINDA, *MASQUERADE, MAX POWER, *MOPELIA, *NOT MINE, *ORANGUTAN, *PERSEVERENCE, *PINOT NOIR, *ROCK & ROLL, RUM AT SIX, RUM PUPPY, SAVASANA, *SEA SHADOW, *SHAKEDOWN, *SOLARIS, *TENACIOUS, *TENACIOUS (yes, a second one), TOLO, VMAX, and WASABI.

Complete list (including fence sitters) at:
http://www.j105.org/KWRW2008/entries.php

Of those 35 there are nine newbies. So forty or more is possible, and we may be on our way to another record fleet. If you know of boats that have escaped my net, please let me know.

In its meeting on October 25, the J/105 Class ExCom voted to make this regatta an "owner aboard" event, so check Rule 3.6 to see what that means. All other arrangements should be the same as last year, including the inspections and the scoring for the Southern Circuit (KW, St. Pete NOOD, and Charleston Race Week). This year you will have the option of a floatline or weight certificate, but next year (2009) you will need to have a weight certificate.

Allan Williams notes that there will be three Bermuda teams at KW this year and he invites you all to the Bacardi Invitational International Race Week in Bermuda. It runs from 26 April to 2 May. I did it one year and they have high wind and flat water -- a sailors dream. They have a Canadian representative, but they need at least a couple from the USA to challenge the local boats. Allan is arranging special shipping rates for you if you are interested. Contact him directly at inshallah@bermuda.com.

Next update in a few weeks. All you need will be at:

Cheers,
Nelson

Key Westers,

Now would probably be a good time to register for KWRW if you have not already done so. The entry deadline is December 14. We currently have 35 confirmed with 27 of those (asterisked below) registered with Premiere-Racing. Here's the direct link to the on-line entry page:
http://keywest.perfectprize.com/

Here are the boats that are currently committed (ones with asterisks already registered):
*ACHIEVER V, *ANOTHER HAZARD, BABE, *BAT IV, *BLINK, *CONVEXITY, EAGLES WINGS, ECLIPSE, *FLAME, FORERUNNER, *GRACE O'MALLEY, *GUMPTION, *JA2, *J'MAKIN'WAVES, *KINCSEM, *LINDA, *MASQUERADE, MAX POWER, *MOPELIA, *NOT MINE, *ORANGUTAN, *PERSEVERENCE, *PINOT NOIR, *ROCK & ROLL, *RUM AT SIX, RUM PUPPY, SAVASANA, *SEA SHADOW, *SHAKEDOWN, *SOLARIS, *TENACIOUS, *TENACIOUS (yes, a second one), TOLO, *VMAX, and *WASABI.

Complete list (including five I have not heard from) at:
http://www.j105.org/KWRW2008/entries.php

We still do not have anything in the way of a party planned. If you would like to take responsibility for that, please contact me. Also, we will probably do the inspections in place for those boats in the Bight. If you want to help with inspections, please contact me.

The "fun awards" from last year included: Middling, Five Aboard, Newbies, Family, Mixed Gender, Greybeards, and New Blood. If you have suggestions for changes, now is the time to offer them. One change I'm contemplating is making these awards on Thursday after racing instead of Friday. There have not been alot of place changes on Friday and it gives us an excuse to all gather at the JBoats tent on Thursday for a mini-party. Look here for the definitions from last year.

Key Westers,

The entry deadline is fast approaching (December 14), so if you are one of the (two) boats that have not currently registered (hint, hint ... ECLIPSE & RUM PUPPY), you can do so without penalty this week. Our entries stand at 35 confirmed and 33 registered. Please go here to register on-line.

You may now sign up on-line for inspection times. If you are in the Bight, the inspectors will come to you this year. There are also declarations that you need to fill out for sails, crew, and fun awards. If you have any difficulties, please let me know about them, so I can fix the on-line system. Here's the line (see "Forms and declarations to fill out").
http://www.j105.org/racing/kwrw.php

There have been a few recent changes to this mailing list. For past "e-mail Updates #1-4" go here:
http://www.j105.org/KWRW2008/email.php
As always, if you want off this list, please let me know.

Finally, Bruce Stone tells me his bowman, Bob Dearborn (196#), (415) 302-2419 or bdearborn@ednet.com. is looking for a ride and Karen Yingling says she has a couple of slips available at the Conch Republic Seafood – full slips – no rafting.. They are available beginning Friday prior to race week through the Sunday after race week. It is $5/foot per night – so for a J/105 it is $170 per night. This is a J/Boat only marina – so you will be with family! You can contact Karen at karen@jconcierge.com.

Happy holidays, everyone! And if you haven't already done so, get a bunch of J/105 Calendars for your crew here:

Cheers,
Nelson

Looks like 34 boats are going to be on the line in two weeks.

Here are the boats that are currently registered with Premiere-Racing:
*ACHIEVER V, *ANOTHER HAZARD, *BAT IV, *CONVEXITY, *DISTANT PASSION, *EAGLES WINGS, *ECLIPSE, *FLAME, *FORERUNNER, *GRACE O'MALLEY, *GUMPTION 3, *JA2, *JADED, *J'MAKIN'WAVES, *KINCSEM, *LINDA, *MASQUERADE, *MAX POWER, *MOPELIA, *NOT MINE, *ORANGUTAN, *PERSEVERENCE, *ROCK & ROLL, *RUM AT SIX, *SAVASANA, *SEA SHADOW, *SHAKEDOWN, *SOLARIS, *TENACIOUS, *TENACIOUS (yes, a second one), *TWO FEATHERS, *VMAX, *WASABI, and *WIND CZAR.

Many of you have not completed the Class declarations. The status of all declarations is here:
http://j105.org/KWRW2008/status.php
Complete are GUMPTION 3, BAT IV, and ROCK & ROLL.

The link to the sail declarations was incorrect (it pointed to the crew declaration). Thanks to Kevin Grainger for the correction. Here are all the correct links:
Time slots for inspections: http://j105.org/KWRW2008/inspections.php
Fun Awards: http://j105.org/KWRW2008/fun.php
Crew Declaration: http://j105.org/KWRW2008/crew.php
Sail Declaration: http://j105.org/KWRW2008/sails.php

It makes it MUCH easier for all concerned if you take a few minutes to fill in these forms. Thanks!

The Class Party will be held at the JBoats tent on Thursday, January 24th, at 6:00 p.m. There will be plenty of food for you and your crew. This will also be the venue for presenting the "Fun Awards". So don't miss it and don't be late! Pass the word.

Cheers,
Nelson

Thanks to all who have gotten their paperwork in. The list below has the ones who still owe me something. I'm going from the status sheet here:
http://j105.org/KWRW2008/status.php

ACHIEVER V, EAGLES WINGS, ECLIPSE, FLAME, FORERUNNER, GRACE O'MALLEY, JADED, MOPELIA, NOT MINE, PERSEVERENCE, SAVASANA, SEA SHADOW, SHAKEDOWN, SOLARIS, TWO FEATHERS.

If you are waiting for sails to appear on the web site, I have posted all that have been sent to me, so contact your sailmaker. Point them to RI-02-17, which says that a sail is not legal until the sail tag certificate is filed. If there are other issues, please contact me. I'm heading out about noon on Thursday, so any issues must be resolved by then.

We have 19 signed up for the fun awards so far. Please sign up so you are eligible. These will be awarded at the party (Thursday night, 6 p.m. at the JBoats tent -- bring your crew). I understand that JBoats will have some important news for J/105 sailors to release at KWRW, so be sure to stop by.

For those interested in having their loved-ones at home follow the news about the J/105 sailors, I will again be doing a daily blog starting Saturday. Just send them to j105.org where there will be a prominent link in the news.

Especially for the first timers, I would like to reiterate that the level of competition at KWRW is extremely high. All who attend are committed racers, from all over the world. Here is the breakdown: Midwest (including TX) 7, New England 5, New York 5, Other East 5, Florida 5, West 3, Bermuda 3, Canada 1. So you will be competing with the best of the best. If you are in the top ten, you have much to be proud of. If you are in the bottom ten, there's no disgrace in that. The objective is to stay safe and have fun.

I'll have some parting words on Thursday morning.

Cheers,
Nelson

Subject: Key West Race Week 2008 -- Update #8 (and last!)

I'm off at noon, so don't fax anything after that time. Most of the status sheet is now green, but there are still a few red cells (missing declarations). I particularly worry about ACHIEVER and SHAKEDOWN who have not even signed up for inspections.

Since the last update, I've been notified that we will have Kattack with us. That means two things. First, that you and your loved ones back at home will be able to follow along, race-by-race, mark-by-mark, at the end of the day. Second, it means that you will be asked to carry a GPS on the stern of your boat and return it after each day's racing. This worked well at the NAC and I encourage you to cooperate. You will need to download a "race player", but everything you need to know is at the Kattac.com site here:
http://kattack.com/

Of course, I will also be providing day-by-day commentary that will be linked to from http://j105.org.

As is now traditional in my last update, I'll warn you about the weather and the protest room. With regard to the weather, hope for the best and plan for the worst. I've seen both. You might see temps in the 70s and 80s every day (as last year) or you might see 50s (as three years ago). So bring some frostbite gear and hope you will never have to use it.

As far as the protest room goes, try to avoid it. There's a long wait (when you can be having beer) and it is never pleasant. You almost always go in there thinking it is a slam dunk in your favor, but when you come out there's still a 50% chance that you lose because your opponent sees the situation differently and can present a more convincing case. So when in doubt, take your penalty on the water and enjoy the beer. It probably will not cost you many places in the regatta (though it might cost a couple places in a race). Also avoid contact at all cost. I know from personal experience what a tiny bump on the rail can cost and when you get into pulpits and hull damage, I don't even want to contemplate the cost. Be safe! Have fun! See you down there!

Cheers,
Nelson
